Azul Intelligence Cloud helps DevOps teams cut unused code and increase security

iTWireTV: Azul senior director of product management Erik Costlow explains how Azul Intelligence Cloud helps DevOps teams around the world identify dead code across an entire Java estate, allowing them to remove code and focus their limited time and resources safely.

Azul provides a fast, secure, high-quality Java platform. It provides the most secure and stable build of OpenJDK, among other tooling and features. You can drop-in the Azul platform to directly replace Oracle Java and reap benefits right away, without re-coding. And now Azul has announced its Azul Intelligence Cloud that greatly aids software teams by determining code that runs, including across third-party libraries, and thus also code that doesn't run.

This is significant; businesses worldwide are under increasing pressure to accelerate application innovation cycles and optimise their development resources while at the same time ensuring the security of their apps and customer data. Azul Intelligence Cloud addresses both these challenges, and helps DevOps teams dramatically recover time otherwise spend on unproductive tasks. The product will identify unused or dead code, providing confidence it can be safely removed.

And with code that's removed, you can remove unit tests. You can potentially remove dependencies. And with each dependency you remove, that's fewer vulnerability reports you have to keep on top of. With each slab of code you remove, that's code that doesn't have to be scanned for risk as vulnerabilities come to light. Imagine expending effort to patch custom code and third-party libraries to deal with an exploitable risk that is never even executed by your app users? Here's where Azul Intelligence Cloud comes in, and how it can help your team better manage your Java codebases as well as focus your limited time and resources on things that matter.

Azul Intelligence Cloud will find old code that hasn't been retired, it will find dependencies linked but never used, and more. In fact, ever since the Log4J event there has been a dramatic risk in false positives originating out of the various tools organisations of all sizes have employed to address Java application vulnerabities. Make all this a thing of the past with Azul Intelligence Cloud, providing unprecedented precision and intelligence using the information already inside Java Virtual Machines running in production.

In our talk, Azul senior director of product management Erik Costlow takes us through it.

I later joked with Erik, off camera, how in days past some companies measured software developer productivity in terms of lines of code. I said how amusing it could be that Azul Intelligence Cloud provides a more secure, more maintainable product with a negative line of code contribution - by helping remove code.

Erik said it's even more significant than that; while test-driven development is a good thing "imagine all the test doing is verifying the code that you don't need works," he said. "So if I delete the code now I've got a failing test." In fact, this holds some developers from removing baggage in code because if they go to delete it, they get a red bar in their tests. But with Azul Intelligence Cloud, "I can delete twice as much because I don't need that test anymore."
